One-to-one tuition

Learn at your own pace and in your own space

After 14-years of teaching oil painting this is everything you’d expect from one of my popular Weekend Workshops or Oil Painting Thursday courses, except it’s in the comfort of your own home and with my undivided attention.

No expensive kit-lists, ALL MATERIALS are supplied, making it perfect for people wanting to try oil painting for the first time. Everything needed to create an oil painting is included.

I bring the studio to you, but we don’t need loads of space. A good-sized kitchen table with room enough for two people is enough. I also bring a wipe-clean tablecloth for us to work on and students are encouraged to wear old clothes.

Subject matters

Choose from one of my specially designed photo reference cards covering still-life, landscapes or portraits. There are options for all levels of experience, from beginners to beyond.

My photo reference cards are designed to help guide students through the oil painting process and include colour-swatches to aid colour-identification and mixing, plus a guide to tonal values to inform structure. Students can supply their own photo references, or for an additional cost, bespoke photo reference cards can be created for £120 per card.

No white spirits or turps

NO white spirits or turps are used during the one-to-one sessions. We only use Zest-it products to clean our brushes or dilute our paints, so we don’t create too much smell. I only like to use the best materials and, fortunately, they’re all from UK-based businesses as well. All of my Michael Harding oil paints are non-toxic, classed as vegan and hand-made in Wales. My brushes are from one of Rosemary & Co’s top synthetic ranges, Ivory. As they’re synthetic they’re also vegan-friendly. Hand-made in Yorkshire.

Don’t just take my word for it, hear what one of my students has to say…

Dan Stilitz — student testimonial

I’ve always loved painting but hadn’t done any for many years. Oil painting had always fascinated me as a medium, as so much great art has been created with it. Having had lessons with Rob, I now understand why it’s such a wonderful medium. It enables you to build up a painting over time. It can be quick or slow, and the possibilities are endless.

Rob is a brilliant teacher. He has a step-by-step approach which means that oil painting is accessible even to the complete beginner. He is hugely encouraging and enabled me to get results I’d never have dreamed of.

It was extremely helpful to have all the materials supplied. As a beginner, it’s difficult to know what to work with – there’s so much variety and choice. Rob navigates through that for you and ensures you have everything you need. It also means you save a lot of money you might have wasted trying to procure your own materials inexpertly.

It worked very well for me that Rob would travel to my home. It meant that I could set up a place to work and carry on working on my paintings between lessons, without having to move around. It also saved me travelling time.

I thought Rob’s tuition was fantastic value for money. I learned much more quickly having Rob’s undivided attention, and the whole process was speeded up by working one-to-one. I’ve now got to the stage where I feel more confident in painting on my own. I would not have got there so quickly without investing in some one-to-one lessons.

I can’t recommend Rob’s tuition highly enough. It’s brilliant fun and has been quite transformative for me. He’s incredibly enthusiastic and encouraging, and works with your own interests. I now feel like a painter and look forward to pursuing my art even more.
